Fuzhou and Xiamen, in Fujian province, will see a rapid development of their urban rail systems by 2018, and the modernization of their transportation will be achieved throughout the province by 2030, according to a guideline released by provincial authorities.

The guideline sets clear goals that the length of urban rail transit should exceed 100 kilometers by 2018 and 130 kilometers by 2020, of which Xiamen, Fuzhou and Quanzhou will take the lion’s share.

3-billion yuan ($480 million) will be invested, mostly in the first phase of the construction of the urban rail transit in Fuzhou and Xiamen from 2014 to 2018.

Currently, Fuzhou metro line 1 is under construction, and line 2 is in the preliminary design stage. Xiamen metro line 1 will enter service in 2018, line 2 in 2019 and line 3 in 2020. Quanzhou metro line 1 will be completed and open in 2020.

Additionally, two intercity rails in Fuzhou will open one by one in the future. Sightseeing tramcars around the island are due to start construction by the end of 2015. The Xiamen-Zhangzhou-Quanzhou intercity rail lines 3 and 1 are scheduled to come into service in 2018 and 2020, respectively.
