Danxia landform in Taining - Mountains formed from reddish sandstone which has been eroded over millions of years to create amazing landscape
Located in northwest part of Fujian, Taining County is famous for its amazing Danxia landform with deep-cutting canyons, exotic caves, clean water and primitive ecology.
Danxia, which means "rosy cloud", is a special landform which is found only in China and is formed from reddish sandstone that has been eroded over time into a series of mountains surrounded by curvaceous cliffs and many unusual rock formations.
The landforms were included in the World Heritage List following the World Heritage Committee's 34th meeting, held in Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, on August 1, 2010.
Besides the natural scenic attractions, tourists are also suggested to visit the fascinating cultural relics dotted around its ancient old town.
Shangqingxi Stream Bamboo Rafting 上清溪漂流
Hiding in between the valleys among the mountains, Shangqingxi Stream is an incised meander formed by geological movement 65 million years ago. It is about 16,500 metres long and 20 metres wide at its widest point, and the narrowest point only has enough room for two bamboo rafts to pass through. The most spectacular view here is the 60-metre high LuoXia Cliff, which is famous for its bright-red color.
The DaJinHu Lake Scenic Area is the core part of the UNESCO-accredited Taining World Geopark. Covering an area of 461 square kilometers, it is rich in natural features with 72 peaks, 36 cliffs, 18 caves, 5 springs and 2 waterfalls. The major attractions here include Grand Red Cliff, Ganlu Temple, BaiShuiJi Waterfall, Linear Sky, Couple Peak and Yuanyang Lake.

ZaiXia Grand Canyon 寨下大峡谷
The deep and serene canyon is surrounded by amazing Danxia cliffs which have little caves bestrewing the surfaces. The area is like a maze with passages consisting of small and big canyons connected together. There’s a small Hakka village in the canyon where visitors can get a taste of the authentic lifestyle of Hakka people.
Taining Ancient Town 泰宁古镇
Adjacent to the Dajinhu Lake, Taining Ancient Town boasts well-preserved traditional residences from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) along the Yangtze River. It also features the Shangshudi Dwellings, which are under national protection, and many well-kept lanes and folk residences dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911).
Ming Qing Museum 明清园
The museum showcases delicate wood carvings, an amazing forest of steles and historical buildings with different architectural styles in an elegant traditional Chinese garden.
Yuhua Cave 玉华洞
The cave has more than 180 underground scenic spots which are formed by lime rocks. "Immortal's Field", "Alchemical Furnace", "Litchi Pillar", "Dragon Coming out from Sea" and “Child Kowtowing to Guanyin”, are various shapes of lime rocks that show the visitors wonderful views in the cave.
What to eat
Taining's local food is a little bit salty and spicy and is characterized by river fish, domestic fungus, bamboo shoot, Youjiang bean curd and various edible wild herbs. Distinct flavor snacks can be represented by Green Roll, Zhuangyuan Ci, Nuangu Bun, Xiancao Cake, Bean Jelly, Lei Tea, etc. During summer and autumn nights, there are many special Night Teas serviced by the riverside of the city. It’s wonderful to go there to enjoy the tea with the lovely night scenery and mild wind.
Where to buy
The main native products of Taining are various edible wild mushrooms, delicious fish, dried bamboo shoot, lotus seed, ganoderma lucidum, Hushang Yan Tea, bine tea, watery wine, etc. The handicrafts are mainly wood- or bamboo-produced artwork. The shopping areas are in Shangshu Lane, Zhuangyuan Street, as well as many shops spread in each scenic spot. You don’t need to worry about getting a deal as the Taining people are honest and the prices are usually fair.
