As the island’s first “artery” running from north to south, Xiamen Chenggong Avenue which links Yanwu Bridge and Xinglin Bridge was finally fully opened to traffic on Sept. 25.

As the most important section of Chenggong Avenue, Wucun Tunnel has been fully furnished with sound panel and fireproofing coating. In order to pretty up the tunnel and ease driving fatigue, the wall of Wucun Tunnel was painted with colorful fishes swimming in the sea.

Mr. Yang, general manager of Xiamen Road & Bridge Building Company said, with a full length of 14.3 kilometers, Chenggong Avenue is the first urban express way running from north to south in Xiamen. It only takes 20 minutes driving from Yanwu Bridge to Xiamen airport by the Chenggong Avenue.

“The most important thing is that the Chenggong Avenue, which connects with all the eastbound and westbound main roads, will greatly relieves the traffic pressure in Xiamen and optimize the structure of road network.” said Mr. Yang.

The Wucun tunnel Punan section, which is 650 metres long, is the hardest but most important part of the whole project. It is constructed beneath 95 old buildings and had taken 878 days from beginning to breakthrough.

Chenggong Avenue can be divided into four sections according to the date of opening to traffic.

From south to north, the four sections are: Yanwu Bridge- Wenzeng Road (June, 2008); Wenzeng Road- Lianqian Xi Road (Sept. 25, 2009); Lianqian Xi Road -Yi’ai Road (January, 2009) and Yi’ai Road- Huandao Bei Road (December, 2007).

Particular going to hotel where the actual hotel English name may not be the same to the equivalent hotel Chinese name. So alot of guess work and taking you "round-world" trip and having to pay more.

A map showing this new road would be very useful here. Or we could just leave it up to luck and fate to find our way, like the taxi drivers here do.
