The 2014 Gulangyu Cup International Football Clubs Tournament was held on 21st June at the Gulangyu People's Stadium.

As an annual football competition on the scenic and historic Gulangyu Island, the Second Gulangyu Cup International Football Clubs Tournament is scheduled to kick off on 20th June at the Gulangyu People's Stadium this year, promising a tour of sporting fun on the island.

Jointly conceived and organized by What's on Xiamen (WOX) and the Xiamen International Football Club (XMIFC) in 2012, the 7-a-side football tournament is gaining burgeoning popularity with the support of the Gulangyu Sub-district Office, and this year it will see 16 football teams slug it out in the competitive event, two teams more than last year.

The event last year saw participation of 14 football teams.

Everyone can be part of this sporting carnival on the historic islet as the event is open to the public for free. Visitors can complete their Dragon Boat Festival (or Duanwu Festival) tour in Xiamen on 20th June with the historic approach to Gulangyu Island, one of the places of origin of Chinese football.

The Gulangyu People's Stadium, which was formerly known as Fan Zai Qiu Pu (็•ชไป”็ƒๅŸ”), was built as a football pitch in late 19th century. It was used exclusively by foreign residents on the Gulangyu Island to play tennis, baseball and football before 1941.

The Fan Zai Qiu Pu was opened to the residents on the Gulangyu Island in 1941. It was renamed as the Gulangyu People's Stadium after reconstruction in October 1956.

The football pitch was formally recognized by the Chinese Football Association as the earliest documented official football pitch in modern China.
