Cycling in Xiamen used to be a standard transport for many to commute and to get to places, 30 years of reform in China has changed that.

Cycling is a very efficient and effective mode of transportation optimally suited for short to moderate distances. Bicycles provide numerous benefits compared to motor vehicles, including exercise, no fossil fuel depletion, no air or noise pollution, much reduced traffic congestion, easier parking, greater maneuverability, and access to both roads and paths.

Bicycles are used for recreation at all ages. Bicycle touring, also known as cyclotourism, involves touring and exploration or sightseeing by bicycle for leisure. A brevet or randonnée is an organized long-distance ride.

Biking has gained momentum again, but this time for recreation, a leisure pastime, exercise and sports rather than as a means of transport. With the increasing number of bicycles on the road, China, once the country fondest of cycling, is back designing infrastructure for bikes.

Bike tracks are the priority of Xiamen’s town planning. Haicang District has taken on the task of turning itself into a biking centre in Xiamen, the biggest in Fujian or possibly in the country.

Cycling in Xiamen used to be a standard transport for many to commute and to get to places, 30 years of reform in China has changed that. Now the roads and streets of Xiamen have been taken over by cars, which have now become the standard transport in Xiamen.

Cyclists are being pushed out of the roads filled with dangerous drivers, clueless pedestrians, and potholes. There is almost no separate route for bicycles in the urban part of the city and cyclists are forced to ride alongside vehicles traveling 60kmph. And it's usual practice for pedestrian zones to be blocked by the illegally-parked cars.

Cycling involves drastically reduced protection in crashes, particularly with motor vehicles. Riding predictably reduces the chances of a crash with a motor vehicle. Here are some tips to cycle safely:

▲ Look behind you before you turn, overtake or stop
▲ Use arm signals before you turn right or left
▲ Obey traffic lights and road signs
▲ Don’t ride on the pavement unless there’s a sign saying that you can
▲ On busy or narrow roads, don’t cycle next to another person
▲ When overtaking parked cars, watch out for car doors opening suddenly and allow room to pass safely
▲ Don’t use headphones while cycling
▲ Never use a mobile phone while cycling

Cycling at Huandao Road, the golden tourist area in Xiamen, is not only a great way to get exercise but also a way to refresh your mind.

In Xiamen, electric bikes are restricted in certain CBD areas such as Hubinnan Road and Hunbinbei Road.

Cycling at Huandao Road, the golden tourist area in Xiamen, is not only a great way to get exercise but also a way to refresh your mind. The best section for cycling is the coastline from Hulishan Cannon Fortress to Yefengzhai Amusement Park, near Huangcuo Beach.

Double seated bicycles designed for two riders, which are also known as tandem bicycles or twin bicycles are available. Riding a normal, single-rider bicycle is a very rewarding experience, but a tandem bicycle adds a whole new dimension to cycling.

Wuyuan Bay, as well as having a flourishing yachting industry, is also a fantastic place for cycling.

Wuyuan Bay, as well as having a flourishing yachting industry, is also a fantastic place for cycling. A number of appealing pictures form new scenic sights of Wuyuan Bay, such as the myriad twinkling lights of a seaside city, sailing boats, evening songs by fishermen, unique customs of ethnic minorities, reflections of upturned eaves on water and so on.

According to the design concept of the "bright moon rising from sea level" of the Wuyuan Bridge, four arch bridges will be built on Wuyuan Bay to create the magnificent spectacle of five arch bridges standing side by side. Along the way you can see a view of the sea, beach, grass, trees, sculpture, which form a beautiful waterfront corridor.
