This month (July 2013), WOX will pick the city’s Zhongshan Road and Lundu area to collect and write news and information articles on to show various aspects and provide useful information of this area for you to read and use as a visiting reference.

As the oldest business street in Xiamen, Zhongshan Road runs through a historical part of the city. The century-old shopping street covers a total area of 1 million square meters and takes up nearly one third of the total business area of the city, which was officially opened as a pedestrian street on 16th Sept, 2010. Zhongshan Road was selected among "China’s 10 Famous Historical and Cultural Streets" in 2012.

Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Street in Xiamen

Zhongshan Road is one of the most prosperous traditional and comprehensive commercial areas in Xiamen. With a very long history, the architecture along the road is a combined style of East and West. The large shopping centers, together with a variety of small retail stores here, are characterized by an abundance of items as well as a fairness of price, attracting many tourists. Many stores are open from nine o'clock in the morning until very late at night. North and South Siming Road and Lady Street nearby are also good places for shopping.

As an outstanding characteristic in Xiamen architecture, arcade buildings are preserved very well in this city. This architectural style was introduced into Xiamen from Southeast Asia. In recent years, Xiamen has sped up the conservation of arcade buildings along Zhongshan Road to restore this oldest street.

Walking under the arcade buildings, you can find the most authentic Xiamen. The small tea tables in front of the shops, the old people who sit against the pillars and the colorful small wares, constitute a picture of peaceful Xiamen life.

Opposite to the Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Street, there is Lundu Ferry Terminal, where you can take a ferry to the scenic Gulangyu Island. The round trip ticket is RMB 8. It runs from 5:45a.m. to 0:30a.m. in the next morning, about 10-20 mins a boat.
