Mangrove forest at the estuary of Zhangjiang River

The mangrove forest, located between the land and sea, is an important biological chain in the ecological system. It not only contains a large amount of animal and plant species, but also protects the shores against natural disaster's like typhoons. The distribution of the mangrove forest in China is mainly in Guangxi, Guangdong, Fujian, Taiwan, Hainan, and Zhejiang. In Fujian, the largest scale mangrove forest is the Zhangjiang Kou Mangrove Forest.

The Zhangjiang Kou Mangrove Forest, the most important wetland in Fujian and the best destination for an ecological tour, sits at the estuary of the Zhangjiang River, Yunxiao County, Zhangzhou. It was set up in 1992 and wass listed as a national natural reserve in 2003.

 

With an area of 2360 square meters, the Zhangjiang Kou Mangrove Forest has been enjoying a reputation of the submarine forest, that is because it shows different natural beauties along with the tide.

 
When high tide, the whole forest looks like a green island from afar. Then the best way to visit the forest is by boat. Boating among the mangrove forest, visitors can pass through various kinds of mangrove trees totalling 224 species such as Kandelia, Aegiceras corniculatum, and Bruguiera conjugata. Also, the visitors can enjoy themselves by fishing.


As the low tide comes, the mangrove forest shows a different view. In the mudflats are countless mudskippers, horse-shoe crabs and various kinds of mollusks. All the living creatures are alive and active at the intervals, attracting mostly water birds and other living creatures.

Zhangjiang River is reported as the lightest polluted river in Fujian and the mangrove forest at the estuary of Zhangjiang River is a must stop for the migrating birds. Each year, there are more than 100 species of migrating birds taking a break here during the migrating season. Most of them are protected bird such as pintail, night heron, Hydropogne, and caspia.

 

The Mangrove forest is as an ideal spot for an ecological tour as it is also rich in wild animal species such as Dugong dugon, Python molurus, and Pseudorca crassidens, which are the tourist treasure of Zhangzhou.

1) Take a coach to Yunxiao County at Hubin Nan Coach Station - then take bus to Zhangjiang Kou Mangrove Forest.

 

2) Use a travel agent:
