Churches in Xiamen

Since 1842, David Abeel, an American missionary preached in Xiamen, gospel has taken root in this beautiful island. Over more than 160 years, many churches have been built in this city. At present, there are more than 40 churches in Xiamen.
Christ the King Catholic Church

Christ the King Church was built by the Spaniards in 1917. Located at 34 Lujiao Road, Gulangyu Island, it boasts of a Gothic architectural style with beautiful interior designs. The structure occupies a land area of 220 square meters.
Hundreds of local and foreign Catholics flock to this church to attend Sunday services.
As one of the main tourist attractions of Gulangyu Island, it attracts more than 10,000 local and foreign tourists every year.
During the 'Cultural Revolution', church services were temporarily stopped. Services resumed during the Christmas season of 1982.
On April 1, 2005, the Xiamen Municipal government cited Christ the King Church as "An Important Historical Site". As a result, the municipal government has allocated funds for its renovation on numerous occasions.
On May 11, 2005, the Fujian Provincial government with decree no. 164 (2005) declared it as the 6th Cultural Preservation Site in the province. The immediate surroundings of this site –- west, south, east, and north or within 15 meters of its radius must be protected.
On May 25, 2006, it was cited in China as the 6th Most Important Cultural Site that must be preserved.
Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church

Our Lady of Rosary Church was built by the Italians in 1860. It is located at 15 Cin Lu, Xiamen City with a land area of 413 square meters.
In 1873, the church built a building for the priests, which has a land area of 1076 square meters.
In 1916, the priests’ building was renovated into a Spanish office.
In 1877, the "Church of Compassion" was built. It housed 5,543 orphans and abandoned babies from 1877-1951. Since 1952, the Kai He Primary School has been occupying the compound.
In 1915, Zheng Yi Primary School was founded. Unfortunately, its operations had to be stopped due to the aftermath of the Japanese Occupation and the subsequent economic crisis in the city.
In 1920, the construction of Xiang Shan Hotel began.
In 1943, Ruo De Hospital was built and for many years was run by a Filipino-British director. It eventually became the Kai Yuan District Hospital in 1958.
Xinjie Christian Church

Xinjie Church has the reputation of 'the First Church of China'. Its history can be traced back to the middle of the 19th century. In 1847, a Christian called Fugui Bo buy a piece of land with 550 dollars and built the first church in Chinese history in the following year. Then the church work can be carried out smoothly.
The church which you can see in Taiguang Road was rebuilt in 1933. It is a Roman style building with six pillars and red pitched roofs. The whole church covers an area of 1313.85 square maters. There is a hexagonal bell tower next to the main building. A bronze bell which was purchased from America in 1848 is still hung in the tower.
Trinity Christian Church

Trinity Church was located in picturesque Gulangyu Island. In the early 20th century, many foreigners moved to Gulangyu and settled down. It is dangerous for them to cross the bay in inclement weather. After much effort, the Christians built a new church in Gulangyu in 1934 and called it 'Trinity Church'.
It is said to be the most beautiful church in Fujian Province. It is a red brick building and covers an area of 2138.62 square meters. 12 open doors and 16 big windows give it a bright and airy feeling. An eight-square bell tower stands on the yellow roof and with a cross on its top.
The choir of Trinity Church is very famous in Xiamen not only because they have beautiful voice but also because the church hall has very good sound effects.
Zhushu Christian Church

Zhushu Church is one of the oldest churches in China. In August 1847, 2 American missionaries rented a local building as a preaching venue. Twelve years later, they finally raised 1300 silver dollars and built a church.
The church was engaged in Chinese education. It established a primary school on February 6, 1855, set up the Xiamen Branch of the Hope and Wilhelmina Hospital in 1884, and built a kindergarten in 1915.
In 1958, three churches were merged into the Zhushu Church. The church now covers an area of 2751 square meters and has more than 4000 followers.
Fuxing Christian Church

This church belonged to Watchman Nee's "Little Flock" sect. It is a quiet garden-like church located in Gulangyu.
Xiaxi Christian Church

Xiaxi Church was built by a headmaster of Minnan Theological Seminary called Guo Ziying in 1907. It was rebuilt in 2007. The new church covers an area of 1335 square meters and has three floors.
