Situated close to Gulangyu's ferry terminal, Underwater World Xiamen covers a land area of 1.75 hectares with a total construction area of 7,708 square meters.

Opened on 1st January, 1998, Underwater World Xiamen is a comprehensive tourist attraction with entertainment and education all under one large-scale aquarium. Besides, it's the only national level science education base in Fujian Province.

There are four main attractions within Underwater World Xiamen including the Freshwater Aquarium; the Marine Aquarium; the Sperm Whale Specimen Exhibition Hall and Dolphin & Sea lion Performance Hall, which enables visitors to understand, appreciate and stay close to the underwater world.

Underwater World Xiamen is situated in the subtropical zone that is ideal for breeding many beautiful tropical species; hence it displays a wide variety of ornamental fish. Altogether, 350 species and over 10,000 rare aquatic animals from all over the world are kept within the aquarium. It displays most kinds of rare and precious marine species from every part of China, as well as Australia and the Amazon River.

Since it was opened in 1998, the number of species has grown in size. Underwater World Xiamen is home to the biggest and most complete sperm whale specimens in China such as the 150kg Giant Lithosporic, the 2-meter long Arapaima and the 3-meter long sawfish. Moreover, Underwater World Xiamen is home to the biggest and most complete sperm whale specimen in China, which is 18.6 meters in length and 48 tons in weight.

Walking along an 80-meter long transparent tunnel, visitors can stay within close proximity with marine species and feel the charm of the underwater world. In addition, don't miss out on dolphin and sea lions performances.

How to get there: Just head to Xiamen Lundu Ferry Terminal (Lundu matou), Gulangyu Island is approximately 5-6 minutes away from Xiamen Island by ferryboat.
 
Located just a few minutes walk from Gulangyu's Ferry Terminal. Walk to the right and look for the blue-roofed complex, then you will be able to see the giant bronze octopus sculpture at the entrance of Underwater World Xiamen, which is the world's largest octopus sculpture.

General Admission:
Children under 1.0m in height: Free
Children (1.0-1.4 m in height): RMB50
Adults & Children over 1.4m in height: RMB90
Senior Citizens (65 years & over, ID must be presented): RMB50
Military Personnel (require a valid military ID): RMB50

Underwater World Xiamen has launched two great passes:
1. Family Passes (2 adults + child (under 1.4m in height) receive unlimited entry 365 days of the year from date of purchase: RMB450/p.a
2. Individual Pass (unlimited entry): RMB225/p.a

I got so angry in there when everyone was screaming like crazy and knocking on the glass. Poor animals.
In the zoo of my hometown, you don't hear anybody talking, they whisper while watching the underwater animals.
